Last week a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit PNG just north of the border between Oro and Morobe provinces, impacting the remote villages dotted all along the coastline. The tremor was felt in Kokoda, Port Moresby and as far away as Kimbe in West New Britain.
This is our heartland. Our ‘home’ of Oro and the Kokoda region, through to our beloved coastal villages in Morobe Province, including Buakap and Salamaua.
Thankfully, KTF’s health facilities, schools and colleges in the region are all safe. However, visits and reports from KTF teams, the Oro disaster office, and local communities indicate damage to houses and water sources along the north coast of Oro.
Houses have been flattened, water forced from wells during the quake and other local water sources have been polluted from upriver debris. With limited communications in the region, we are working to access reports of the more remote villages closer to the epicentre.
These communities need emergency assistance - water, sanitation and hygiene supplies and essential health services to start. We are ready to respond, alongside in-country partners, but we need your help to do so.
To kick off our appeal, our wonderful friends at the No Roads Expeditions Foundation have generously allocated a massive $20,000 to support the communities in Killerton, Sanananda, Buna and Garara in their time of need. We are responding immediately and providing community water tanks and household containers for the collection of clean drinking water.
Can you help us match their generosity to help other villages impacted in the region?
Every dollar helps our neighbours. Tenkyu tru!
